How Do You Know When To Install Gutters On Your Roof?
One of the common oversights a homeowner makes involves the roof. A roof protects the home by repelling water, keeping cold out in the winter and repelling heat in the summer. But, what happens to all that moisture that falls on your roof?
All that rain, all that melting snow, ice or frost have to go somewhere, right? You’re familiar with the weather we get here in southeast Texas. Hot and dry followed by torrential downpours. Our big Texas skies open up after small rainstorms. This water has to go somewhere.
Is it going right over the edge of your roof straight down to the ground? That water could be threatening the foundation of your home. Foundation problems are caused by the settling of your home on the soil which supports it.
Wait! Is this information about your foundation or about your roof? Yes! Fortunately, we can help you eliminate the threat to your home caused by poor drainage around it.
Gutters and Drainage Problems
Inadequate gutters and downspouts cause water to fall on the ground and puddle around your foundation. Wet soil expands. Flowing water erodes soil. Those puddles could make either of those things happen and cause your foundation to shift, eventually cracking. Repairing a foundation is costly.
There are other problems caused by poor drainage of the water off your roof. Water is falling off your roof forcefully and it’s going to move whatever is in its way. Soil erosion is very common. Soil supports the foundation. When there a change in the soil supporting the foundation, the foundation can suffer stress fractures.
Also, moist environments are ideal breeding grounds for termites and other insects. The fascia boards, those boards at the edge of roof that can be seen by your neighbors, they can rot and disintegrate if they stay wet. Then there is the unseen damage: mold, mildew and all kinds of things that love warm, moist and dark areas.
Installing gutters around the perimeter of your roof, with adequate drainage and water flow in mind, can solve many of these challenges.
Have gutters already? How are they holding up? Are there any leaks in your gutters or your downspouts? Do the downspouts extend far enough away from your home? Which way is the ground sloping under your downspouts? When a downspout is properly installed, it should extend over a portion of the ground that is sloping away from your home.
If your gutters are old, porous, bent, loosening from the roof or not visually appealing to your home, it might be time to get new gutters installed. New gutters can actually improve the value of your home. You can even have gutters that keep debris from clogging up your drainage system.
You would be surprised how many homeowners who have gutters seldom clean them out. We often find plants growing in gutters or birds nesting in them!
