Three Important Things to Know When Hiring a General Contractor (Part I)
The “quick buck”. So many live their lives or run their business trying to make “the quick buck.” Sadly, our roofing and construction industry is often plagued with roofers and general contractors taking advantage of homeowners. We at Duran’s Roofing and Remodeling never practice that way of doing business. Never.
We take pride in the respect from the community for the integrity with which we do business. There are others that do the same.
However, some homeowners fall victim to the promises and guarantees of other contractors which turn out to be empty and unenforceable. These tips will help you start down the right path of finding a roofer and contractor that will provide outstanding and dependable service with great value to you and your home.
There are several ways to determine the legitimacy of the business that is being represented by the nice and persuasive salesman working out of his car. Have they been in the area for a good while? Where else have they done business? Obtain the contact info for the office in those locations and call them to check.
A very important part of determining the legitimacy of the contractor or roofer is finding out whether they have done the type of work they are asking you to let them perform on your home. If you are having your kitchen remodeled, ask the person to show you samples of the work they have done remodeling kitchens elsewhere. The same goes for countertops, flooring and all other jobs you are considering.
In Texas, roofers do not need to be licensed. That means anyone can present their company as legitimate. Having a license in Texas is no different than belonging to an association. Licensure is not indicative of quality in Texas. Don’t make your decision on a particular contractor based on licensure alone. Get all the facts.
LIABILITIES AND INSURANCE
Is the business trying to get your business covered by liability and other insurances? Are they bonded? Those are costs that people looking for “the quick buck” will not incur. The last thing you need is some company or their employees suing you for having to work in a hazardous work environment.
In the next two parts of “Three Important Things to Know When Hiring a General Contractor” we will help you understand some of the documents that need to be in place and also look to the creative enhancements that might be possible when you work with a quality business.
